Strength of Acids and Bases

pH scale and pH chart.

  1. pH stands for potential of Hydrogen.

  2. It is used to find the numeric value of the level of acidity or basicity of a substance.

  3. It is the most common and trusted way to measure how acidic or basic a substance is.

  4. The chemical properties of many solution enables them to be divided into three categories-acidic, basic or neutral solutions.

The pH scale is used to measure acidity and basicity (alkalinity).

Solutions with a pH less than 7 are acidic.

Solutions with a pH of 7 are neutral.

Solutions with a pH more than 7 are basic (alkaline).

The pH scale reads from value 0-14.

Solutions with pH less than 3 are strong acids.

Solutions with pH values of 3-6 are weak acids.

Solutions with a pH value of 7 are neutral.

Solutions with a pH value of more 8-11are weak bases.

Solutions with a pH value of 11-14 are strong bases
