Grade 6- Fishing in Eastern Africa

Fishing is the activity of harvesting fish from water

An area where fishing is done is called a Fishing Ground.


There are two

Types of Fishing Grounds

Inland fishing ground

Involves fresh lakes, rivers, dams, fishponds and swamps.

Types of fish caught are Tilapia, Trout, Nile Perch, Dagaa/ Omena, Catfish, Black bass, Salmon


Marine Fishing Ground

Where fish is harvested from sea or ocean.

The fish caught are; Parrot fish, Mullet, King fish, Tuna, Lobsters, Oysters, Crabs, Pawns-


Fishing methods used in marine fishing include.

a) Purse Seining

Is the use of the us of bag like nets that are spread on a lake assisted to float using weight in water


b) Trawling

It is a method of marine fishing where fishing net is pulled by a boat to catch large amount of fish

c) Long Lining

Long lining - it is a method where long lines with hooks containing baits are tied on a boat or a ship

The lines are thrown in the water to attract fish

d) Net Drifting/ Gill net

Drifting method – is a method where nets called drift nets are hanged vertically in water to trap fish.

Challenges facing fishing in Eastern Africa

  1. Oil spillage in the sea.

  2. Lack of adequate facilities such as fishing and storage facilities.

  3. Use of harmful chemicals.

  4. Lack of adequate capital.

  5. Pollution of rivers and lakes resulting into death of fish.

  6. Overfishing in some fishing grounds.

  7. Lack of good fishing techniques

  8. Poor fish storage

  9. Demand for a particular type of fish

  10. Destruction of corals along the coast

  11. Lack of efficient means of transport

  12. Outbreak of water borne diseases that may led to closure of fishing beaches

  13. Government policies

  14. Over taxation by the government

  15. Inadequate fishing skills


Solutions to challenges facing fish farming in Eastern Africa

  1. Allocating and sourcing for funds

  2. Protecting fishing grounds from foreign vessels.

  3. Provision of proper storage and preservation method.

  4. Educating people on safe fishing method.

  5. Protecting coral reefs from destructions.

  6. Developing rules and regulations to guide the fishing industries

  7. Improve good transport networks for easy transport of fish to the market

  8. Government should loosentight rules and regulations guidingfishing farming

  1. Refrigeration

  2. Sun drying

  3. Canning
