Beat Patterns- Explained

Beats can be grouped into two’s, three’s and four’s

In a rhythm, you can identify the beat pattern by listening to the occurrence of strong beat 


Songs have sections where the music rhythm has strong and weak beats

Strong beats occurs when strong force is applied on a beat

Weak beats occurs when little force is applied on a beat


Two- Beat Pattern

Is a beat pattern which has the strong beat occurring after every two counts or beats


Accent Sign



This sign means that force must be put on a beat

A beat in music is a steady pulse 


Three- Beat Pattern

Is a beat pattern which has the strong beat occurring after every three counts or beats

 

Four- Beat Pattern

Is a beat pattern which has the strong beat occurring after every four counts or beats

The beat patterns helps us feel the song either two’s, three’s, four’s

Conducting can help to identify if a song in two or four-beat pattern.

The strong beat is shown by the hand’s downward movement
