Acids, Bases and Indicators in Real Life

Acids and bases are widely used in our daily life such as in agriculture, food preparation and medicine.


Uses of acids.

  1. Vinegar has various household uses such as preservation.

  2. Citric acid is important part of lemon juice and orange juice; it can also be used in food preservation.

  3. Sulphuric acid is widely used in batteries that are used to start the engines of automobiles.

  4. Industrial production of dyes, paints and fertilizers involve the use of Sulphuric acids and nitric acid.

  5. Phosphoric acid is a key ingredient in many soft drinks.


Uses of Bases

  1. Manufacturing of soaps and paper involves the use of sodium hydroxide.

  2. Calcium hydroxide is used to manufacture bleaching powder.

  3. Magnesium hydroxide is commonly used as a laxative. It also reduces excess acidity in the human stomach and is therefore, used as an antacid.

  4. Slaked lime can neutralize any excess acidity in soils.
